One of our MasterMind Awards judges this year was filmmaker V. Alex Marquez. We don’t choose an unworthy artist to help us judge all the other artists Broward and Palm Beach counties have to offer. A Palm Beach County resident, Marquez is known within the film circuit. His short film Normal won Best Direction and Best Picture awards at the Palm Beach International Film Festival Voices of Local Film competition. His full-length comedy Film Contest? received top honors at the Delray Beach International Film Festival. Basically, the dude’s won awards, and now he’s back competing in the Voices of Local Film competition for his short called House of Heartbreak. Yeah, it’s a dramatic story. It’s a trippy tale about a man who goes into his own subconscious, chasing a lost love “inside the surreal house he built for himself.” The man is played by Frank Licari, an actor/comedian known locally for his roles at the Jove Improv Comedy Experience in Jupiter. The news release says Licari “handled his new dramatic role effortlessly” — no small feat for a comedic man. Sunday, enter the theater of Heartbreak for a couple of hours when the film screens at 7:15 p.m. at the Muvico Parisian Theater in CityPlace (545 Hibiscus St., West Palm Beach). Tickets cost $7 to $10. Visit pbifilmfest.org.
