Friday the 13th. A day that makes the superstitious want to hide. Well, get over it, people. And try to avoid black cats, walking under ladders, and opening umbrellas indoors, because you won't want to miss Leslie Blackshear Smith and her band perform at Friday the 13 N'awlins Jazz & Blues Voodoo Night at the Arts Garage in Delray Beach. Smith, an award-winning singer, songwriter, producer, and author, began her singing career in the streets of New Orleans. She was quickly discovered and invited by the finest musicians in the Crescent City to play in premier music venues. By 17, she reigned on the club scene. And by 19, she was featured in the book Up From the Cradle of Jazz, as the future of New Orleans music. She has performed and recorded with a who's who of New Orleans' finest artists, including Ellis Marsalis and Allen Toussaint, who calls Smith "one of Louisiana's greatest treasures." Smith recorded CDs in many styles, such as jazz, R&B, and gospel. Her songs have also been recorded and released by other artists in a variety of disciplines. She currently performs at festivals around the world, like New Orleans Jazz Fest, and has also performed at Lincoln Center and on radio and TV several times. Get "your voodoo on" on Friday, September 13, at 8 p.m. at the Arts Garage, located at 180 NE First St. in Delray Beach. Tickets cost $25 to $35 and $5 more at the door. Call 561-450-6357, or visit artsgarage.org.
