Salaries for animal rights protesters are at an all-time low. So when fighting for your furry friends in animal jail lands you in people jail, it takes a rich uncle or a generous crowd to alleviate the financial burden. Fortunately for the Smash HLS Nine, the latter will step up to the legal defense plate this Saturday for a benefit show at Propaganda. Smash HLS organizes in-your-front-yard-style protests targeting those who profit from animal testing in South Florida. They track down and publicly shame anyone in the monkey business -- especially those who slice into living primates. ("HLS" stands for Huntingdon Life Sciences -- a behemoth animal-testing lab whom they hope to one day smash.) At an October 2013 protest, nine Smash HLS members were arrested on misdemeanor and felony charges ranging from disorderly conduct to criminal mischief and even assault. The group now faces court and legal fees in the thousands of dollars. For a $5 cover, see local acts Dark Rift, Kat Merkin, Krokodildo, and others this Saturday beginning at 8 p.m. Proceeds will go to the Smash HLS Nine's legal defense fund. (Seriously, the band names alone are worth the cover charge.) Propaganda is located at 6 S. J St. in Lake Worth. Visit propagandalw.com or smashhls.com.
