Friday, there’s a poet-emceed pelapalooza at Cinema Paradiso — the 16th comedy-themed installment in the venue’s slew of art parties. Four live bands, four artists, and an improv theater troupe are packing into the place for performances and exhibits culminating in five short-film screenings. The best part? Admission costs less than a sandwich. It’s called Auteur Explosion XVI, and it starts around 9 p.m. with live music from Moxie Love. Three more bands will undergird the rest of the evening with melody while visitors are let loose to take in art exhibits. At 11:15 p.m., the Laughing Gas Improv Theatre takes the stage for a short play, and then at 11:30 p.m., the screenings roll in. Short comedies by South Floridian filmmakers, these flicks are the cinematic equivalent of organic produce — fresh and local. Actors are advised to bring their headshots with résumés for free admission and schmooze with film-industry types in attendance.

Auteur Explosion XVI “April’s Fool’s Comedy Night” is from 9 p.m. to 1 a.m. Friday at Cinema Paradiso (503 SE Sixth St., Fort Lauderdale). Tickets cost $5. Call 954-525-3456, or visit fliff.com.
Fri., April 1, 9 p.m., 2011
