Using found and recycled materials to create original works of art is a precarious habit. Too often, the finished piece resembles something an aging hippie would concoct using old records, pipe cleaners, and the remnants of a bad acid flashback. Not the case with Jim Drain, an internationally acclaimed artist whose mixed-media fiber-art and sculptural works explode with a careful, clever critique of pop culture. Drain -- who routinely uses repurposed and recycled found objects in his works -- will discuss his unorthodox approach as part of Broward College's 2012+2013 Artist Talk Series. (The six-part series concludes April 24 with Federico Uribe.) Drain and examples of his work will appear at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday in Room 154 at the Broward North Regional Library, located at 1000 Coconut Creek Blvd. in Coconut Creek.
