South Florida landmark Port Everglades will celebrate National Maritime Day with its Third-Annual Port Everglades Shipshape event from 9 a.m. until noon Saturday. The event is meant to beautify the port and to encourage green living by promoting recycling and discouraging littering. In Lot No. 19, nearest to where the Oasis of the Seas will be docked, the port will provide recycled petroleum drums and basic painting supplies. The port also encourages participants to bring their own non-oil-based products (i.e., latex or acrylic) to use in decorating the drums, which will be displayed throughout the 2,100 acre port complex. There is no specific theme for artwork, as it is open to artistic interpretation, but most stick with a maritime or recycling theme. Basic refreshments will be provided. A special staff-guided bus tour of the port complex will also be available to volunteers after the event. If you, your family, or your group are interested in volunteering, contact the Port's special-events hotline at 954-468-3509 or [email protected] by Thursday. Port Everglades is located 1850 Eller Drive, Fort Lauderdale.
