“Watch your children, and watch your chickens” when it comes to Gypsies — so warns a man on the trailer for the film Searching for the 4th Nail. When it comes down to it, people’s knowledge about Gypsies doesn’t stray much beyond fictional characters. American Gypsy filmmaker George Eli hopes to set the record straight with this new film, which will screen Monday and Wednesday at 8 p.m. at Cinema Paradiso (503 SE Sixth St., Fort Lauderdale). A Q & A with Eli himself will follow.

Here’s the lowdown about the legend of the fourth nail. Supposedly, there was a fourth nail that was intended to go through Jesus’ heart during the Crucifixion, but a Gypsy blacksmith stole it. So, God did what God had to do and rewarded Gypsies everywhere the right to steal (everyone else, obey commandment No. 8). Watch the film and discuss whether this legend is a myth, an excuse to steal, or, by researching the legend, a way for a father and two sons to learn how to respect who they are. Tickets cost $10.
