For any musician, being compared to Bob Dylan is an honor. Unless they’re referring to his hair. But the artistic comparison puts the artist side by side with arguably one of the greatest and most incisive songwriters of our time. It’s a lot to live up to, and yet, Brazil’s Caetano Veloso has done just that over the course of his 45-year career. The singer/songwriter and guitarist was considered, along with Gilberto Gil, one of the pioneers of the country’s famed avant-garde Tropicalia or Tropicalismo movement of the ’60s. But Veloso has ever been a shape-shifter, merging influences ranging from Brazilian folk to rock to fado to tango.
