Although some are trying to refer to the next five days as Miami Art Week, most refer to it as Basel in homage to the Swiss art fair that opened in Miami ten years ago. Art Basel Miami Beach opens to the public Thursday at noon and runs through December 4 at the Miami Beach Convention Center (1901 Convention Center Drive, Miami Beach). But at $40 a ticket, consider getting a taste of Basel through the Art Video program, which for the first year will screen for free at SoundScape Park. There's also the Art Public program in Collins Park, where more than 24 artists will display their creations. Visit artbaselmiamibeach.com.

Among the ever-growing numbers of satellite art fairs, Pulse Miami stands out for its high concentration of contemporary photography -- a much-missed medium since Photo Miami was canceled in 2010. It's also housed in a kickass venue, Ice Palace (1400 N. Miami Ave., Miami), where the hammocks outside are almost as worthwhile as the artwork inside. Pulse opens Thursday at 1 p.m. and runs through Sunday. Admission costs $10 to $20. Visit pulse-art.com.

Fountain Miami, which opens Friday and runs through Sunday, contains arguably the most experimental art during Basel. Think entrails worn outside the body, cars set aflame, and piles of discarded trash presented like classical Greek statues. Doors open at noon daily at 2505 N. Miami Ave. in Wynwood.
