Safon Floyd and her art-savvy team have put together an epic open-mic tradition at Tempo Live in Hollywood every first Thursday of the month. Rough Draft, as it is appropriately called, caters to "writers, poets, musicians, dancers, recording artists, visual artists, fashion designers, practically any art form you can think of," Floyd tells us, welcoming walk-ins and preregistered artists to participate at the event, which begins tonight at 8. "Rough Draft," Floyd says, "is exactly as it sounds -- the 'Rough Draft' of every art form," an organically produced night of every genre of art, both performing and visual. Although the music at Rough Draft is typically geared to pop and R&B, all types are welcomed and enjoyed. "It has been my practice to write to music," Floyd says of the freestyle-esque event, which was initially inspired by her own experience at a live jam session. "I thought, 'Wow, it would be pretty cool if someone could write live on a projector right now for us all to see.' " Following a "light bulb" moment, a rough-draft proposal of her own, paired with her passion for music and the creative process, Rough Draft was officially born, now celebrating its third consecutive year and a new Rough Draft movement in NYC, which kicked off earlier this summer. Tempo Live's band or house DJ provides the tunes, "and the artist creates," eventually culminating into a "Final Draft" of a piece. Although guests are welcome to sign up the night of, registration is available via email at [email protected] or by calling 305-600-3097. Admission is free before 9 p.m. and $5 after. Participating performers get in free. Tempo Live is located at 2000 Harrison St., Bay 7, in Hollywood. Visit roughdraftinc.com.
