For the past three years, one of the most popular nights in roller-derby action has been the game between local bruisers the Gold Coast Derby Grrls versus the “Vets” — a team composed of the best roller-derby girls from around the world. Our local brawlers on wheels made the big leagues in 2011, joining the Women’s Flat Track Derby Association. Since then, the Derby Grrls have become a force to be reckoned with. If you have never seen roller derby before, this would be the ideal introduction to this sport on roller skates. Roller derby has become increasingly popular throughout the years, achieving mainstream popularity with the Drew Barrymore-directed hit Whip It. Although there is certainly an entertainment flair to roller derby — players use pseudonyms like Lily the Kid and Lunch Lady — make no mistake: These ladies are fierce on those skates, and the hits are real. Tonight all the sport’s best will be on the rink, including Betsy Wrecksie, Holly Gohardly, Lily the Kid, and Lunch Lady. With all this fine talent in one room, the hits are going to be insane. The roller-derby madness begins at 6 p.m. at War Memorial Auditorium, located at 800 NE Eighth St. in Fort Lauderdale. Tickets cost $5 in advance for general admission and $20 for reserved seating.
