Evan Wyler is a young gay writer struggling in New York. Like every starving artist, he has dreamed of a rich patron sweeping in to bankroll his work, à la a Renaissance court. And now he thinks he has found one in Alexa Vere de Vere, a socialite who claims to be a fame-maker and bohemian-coddler. She promises to be for Evan what Baroness von Waldstätten was for Mozart: a patron and protector. They strike up a weird romance. She hires him to follow her around developing a screenplay about her life. Evan thinks he has found a sugar mama, but then Alexa begins using him as her sugar daddy. What happens next involves shameless fraud and an elaborate revenge plot. As Bees in Honey Drown is being staged at the Rising Action Theatre (Sunshine Cathedral, 1480 SW Ninth Ave., Fort Lauderdale) some 14 years after it premiered in New York to rave reviews and accolades. It opens Friday at 8 p.m. and runs through October 9. Tickets cost $35, or $60 with a dinner package. Call 954-561-2225, or visit risingactiontheatre.com.
Fridays-Sundays. Starts: Sept. 9. Continues through Oct. 9, 2011
