The main characters, Arty and Jay, are two young brothers who have been shoveled off onto their grandma, aunts, and uncle. Their mother has died and the father is working as a traveling salesman to pay off debts. Grandma is not a kindly old lady who dotes on the boys with cookies and milk. Rather, shes a rabid bulldog of a woman, and shes managed to terrify and scar her two daughters, one of whom suffers from a psychosomatic breathing disorder. The boys uncle is a small-time gangster on the run. Its big-city family dysfunction at its finest.
