Imagine you're on your first date with someone new, and the inevitable question of your employment comes up. You can either tell the truth or create some wild, boldfaced lie like, "I'm an actor/playwright/author/screenwriter/solo performer." Depending upon the gullibility of your date, you'll either score a home run or end the evening right then. That is, unless you're Eric Bogosian, in which case you'd be telling the truth. Since the late '70s, Bogosian has written ensemble performances, plays, books, and screenplays (he co-wrote Talk Radio with Oliver Stone); acted in TV and movies (Law and Order, Talk Radio); and eventually began performing his own material. Pounding Rock 'n' Roll into My Forehead, performed by Jerry Seeger, consists of selections from three of Bogosian's solo pieces. Want a sample? Meet the character from "Molecules," who proudly admits, "I got so much syf-liss and gonorrhea pouring outta my penis, you can turn it on and off like a faucet." Now, that you don't want to say to a date. When the prospect of national healthcare was still a possibility in this country, some angry privatization nuts came up with the following brilliant slogan in protest: "Socialized medicine makes me sick!" Sure, that's all fine and dandy if you've got health insurance. But try being really sick and not having any coverage to cut down on your mounting medical bills. Such is the situation of Fort Lauderdale resident LeBeth Carr, who has breast cancer and needs surgery. Because she is employed part-time and has no kids, Carr isn't eligible for Medicaid. While Uncle Sam couldn't give two shits, there are plenty of local bands who do -- Traces of Envy, Repeat Offenders, Superbreed, EverydayMonday, DC-3, Trendkill, and Chicken for Chico. Just try getting a parking space outside of Catfish Dewey's (4003 N. Andrews Ave., Fort Lauderdale). Ever since the family-run restaurant opened in 1984, people have been elbowing one another to get in there, snag one of the tables, sit under the seahorse chandelier, and chow down on all-you-can-eat fried catfish. This is the case even more so on the first Sunday of each month, when Shirley Ray (Dewey's wife) leads the Wild Turkey Band during a hoedown from 6 to 10 p.m. (They join a giant hammerhead shark that permanently occupies the stage.)
