In today's world of mindless boob tube, where eyelash-batting Kim Kardashian or Kate Gosselin and her eight little rugrats get all the limelight, it's refreshing to see programs that delve deep. Call the Midwife, a series based on the memoirs of Jennifer Worth, concerns touching tales of midwifery during the 1950s. Unlike the Kardashians, this series touches upon the human condition -- frail and beautifully imperfect, with a bit of comedy injected in the story line. Young nurse Jenny Lee, accustomed to living an affluent lifestyle, goes to work in the most impoverished area of London's East End, where she connects with a team of nursing nuns. Devoted to helping mothers give birth in homes, some in shoddy conditions, Jenny learns a lesson in love. The English comedy-drama channels to American households on September 30 on WPBT2. To catch the heartfelt series a week early, WPBT2 will host a special, preview screening at Cinema Paradiso on Saturday. The reel begins turning at 7:30 p.m., and the screening is free.
