Once upon a time, there lived a civilization that communicated through sheets of paper, writing utensils, and a stamp. Yes, these primitive beings put forth their messages into envelopes and entrusted the dutiful United States Postal Service to deliver their conversations. Though this ancient method of communication has long since been replaced by modern society, there are those who seek to renew its power and once again give the written letter the respect it deserves. Florida Atlantic University’s Arthur and Mata Jaffe Center for Book Arts has been successfully hosting “Real Mail Fridays” for the past few months. It’s a series of get-togethers that combines letter-writing and art to inspire guests to compose their own letters. The next session is this Friday from 4 to 6 p.m. and includes handmade and commercial papers, pens and inks, rubber stamps, sealing wax... anything they could think of to make the letter-writing experience fun and interesting. There will be coffee, tea, and cookies, and they even supply the postage stamps for your letters.
