How many times have you witnessed an event, a person, an embrace, a fight, a facial expression, or a car crash and said to yourself, "I wish I had a camera"? We've all done it, right? The Young at Art Children's Museum (11584 W. State Rd. 84, Davie) knows it's never too early to instill a discerning artistic eye in children. Every Tuesday, kids ages 10 to 14 can learn the basics during a nine-week Photography Class. Learn how light, heat, film, and other sensitive materials are manipulated to create images taken from the real world and transformed into black-and-white images. The junior photographers can explore a variety of media -- including natural materials, color and black-and-white film, photographic papers, paint, pen, and mixed media -- that are used to make creative works of art. Time in the darkroom is also provided to get a grasp on the appropriate developing chemicals and times. Take part and see what "develops." Heh heh. Photography humor! The class may not turn you into the next Annie Leibovitz, but practice makes perfect. Space is limited, and reservations are required. The class fee for nine weeks is $110 for museum members, $135 for nonmembers. The materials fee is $20. What's with all these princess fetishes among little girls, anyway?
Any man, and almost any older woman who may have forgotten large swaths of her childhood, is probably totally lost on this whole princess fixation that girls have. What's the deal? Well, maybe we can see some bonuses to the idea -- being a figurehead of a nation has its advantages. In any case, feed your child's delusions at the Tamarac Community Center (8601 W. Commercial Blvd., Tamarac) from 12:30 to 2:30 p.m. Saturday. Children ages 5 to 11 are encouraged to dress up for a few hours of games, prizes, and face painting. Bring a camera to get your Little Highness' photo when a coach comes around carrying a princess costume. Admission is $8 for residents, $13 for nonresidents. Preregistration is required.
