If you like your spy thrillers rough, local, and lo-fi, then don’t miss She Is a Spy. The 1998 cult film from West Palm Beach’s own Chocolate Star Productions is directed by no-budget auteur Gary Davis, whose delectable archive includes titles like The Nubian Vampire and Santa Vs. Zombies. A tale about a drug dealers, the fuzz, and an inevitable ex-KGB agent, She Is a Spy will screen at 8 p.m. at the Lake Worth Playhouse. It’s the first in a weekly summer series of movies shot in South Florida by South Floridians.
A red-carpet fashion show will accompany this screening, and future weeks will feature an episodic noir called The Detective Story, a networking night, and an evening of student shorts.
“What we’re really doing is creating avenues for independent filmmakers,” says Nicely Jean, an actor in She Is a Spy and a coproducer who helps run Chocolate Star. “More than anything else, we want to give more exposure to South Florida and all talent, crew, and resources that are here.” Admission is $10 to each event. The Lake Worth Playhouse is at 713 Lake Ave. in Lake Worth. Call 561-586-6410, or visit chocolatestar.net.
