Tattoos are an ancient form of human expression — rich with symbolic meaning and cultural significance. Some tattoos signify religious devotion, rites of passage, or involvement with a certain group. Others act as protection against evil forces or to increase luck. And still others simply allow us to show the world that we like our name a lot or that we identify with barbed wire, chaos (or does that symbol actually mean potato?), or scary clowns. Perhaps the most common meaning conveyed by today’s tattoo is that the skin which bears it is the skin of one who effin’ rocks (to some degree).

It is for this reason that the Art Nouveau crew has put together an event to celebrate tats and other body modifications in all their badassness. “Rock ‘n’ Tatt” will fill the Lounge (517 Clematis St., West Palm Beach) not only with specimens of inked and prodded flesh but with paintings, photography, jewelry, and work in other media from more than 20 artists who have been inspired by (you guessed it) tattoos and rock ’n’ roll. To keep the full-sleeved punkers, stamped tramps, and tribal-banded bros all partying as one inked family, there will be live DJs, burlesque dancers, and drink specials all night. There will also be sushi, cupcakes, and, for the needle weary, body painting. Doors open at 8 p.m., and attendees are encouraged to dress in rock-star attire to this free event.
