The Eckerd Theatre Company combines a classic children's tale with a new, original story when the troupe comes to the Broward Center for the Performing Arts (201 SW Fifth Ave., Fort Lauderdale) at 10 a.m. Friday. First, kids meet Scorch, a young dragon, who then continues the action with a lively retelling of Stone Soup.

For those who haven't heard the tale before, it breaks down like this -- there's a big famine, so everyone's hoarding what little food they have. A stranger comes to town and offers to make stone soup. He heats some water, tosses in a stone, then idly comments how much better it would be with some cabbage. So one villager offers the cabbage he's been hiding. Then the stranger says it would be even better with some beef -- then carrots, potatoes, onions, etc., etc. Eventually, everyone shares his food, and so everyone gets a delicious meal. It's a great moral tale about sharing -- and also about how conning gullible bumpkins can get you a free meal.

Following this story, Scorch continues on to the new tale, Dragon Dumplings. Tickets cost $5 for the Friday 10 and 11:30 a.m. shows, or $11 for the 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. shows Saturday. If you can't make any of those, the show also goes on at the Miniaci Performing Arts Center (3100 Ray Ferrero Jr. Blvd., Fort Lauderdale) at 7 p.m. Friday. Call 954-462-0222. -- Dan Sweeney
