Close your bar tab a little early on Saturday night – you’ve got morning calisthenics to do on Sunday. Yes, it’s time to lace up your shoes, open your wallet, and stroll for a very good cause, the Florida AIDS Walk.

You care about the people in your community and you want them to stay their healthy, sweet selves, but the numbers aren’t in our favor. South Florida has catapulted ahead of the rest of the country in new HIV/AIDS cases with 87,000 residents now diagnosed. Just to put that in perspective, that’s more than 141 times the number of Starbucks cafes in the state (which is 615 if you’re wondering). It’s time for a critical mass.

Let your friends and neighbors know that they aren’t alone when you walk both with, and for, them today. You’ll all be in good company: Mario Cantone (Charlotte’s sassy wedding stylist from Sex in the City) is the day’s special guest. Register yourself or pledge through another walker at floridaaidswalk.org. Registration is 8 a.m. at the Huizenga Plaza (One E. Las Olas Blvd., Fort Lauderdale); the walk starts at 10 a.m., but do yourself a favor and get there early, about 4,000 folks are expected to take part.
