The charms of New Times contributor Courtney Hambright go well beyond her abilities to pen a clever phrase. We were particularly pleased with her recent profile of local singer-songwriter-goofball Mike Mineo because the reportage included plenty of passages like this:
In the spring of 2006, Mineo, who plays acoustic guitar without a pick

so that he can "articulate bass lines," apparently soiled his instrument

during a pretty wild gig. "When I started playing, people went

apeshit," he says. "I was playing so hard that I cut my finger and

didn't even know it. Mountain men were freaking out, and mountain women

dragged me home. I let a few of them."

Yep. So anyhow, Hambright's blog is a great read too. After you read Travis Newbill's review of the Mike Mineo album release party, follow it up with her thoughts on the show over at Mood Vane.

Also of interest in Hambright's entry is some of the first scratchings about Boca Raton indie pop upstarts Goolsby. We can gather that the guys used to call themselves Quiet River, and the lineup includes

singer/guitarist Paul Simundich, guitarist Matt Salcito, bassist Oz Del

Castillo, and drummer Jeff Rose. These guys have past ties to area groups the Marchen, Stonefox, It's Latin, and Alaska.

Via Hambright:

They're loud and rocking, but it's not one big blurry sound. The music

is dramatic and they're composed and jokey in a way that makes me

wonder, what is it the kids are into now? Paul Simundich (sigh!) played

barefoot -- again, what are the kids into now? -- and even rolled his

guitar back over his head to botch up a little behind-the-neck action.

Judging by the songs posted on Goolsby's MySpace, including the playful "Wild Once," the kids will get some more attention in this space soon.
