Let me tell you something: Duwayne Burnside can flat out play guitar. The son of veteran bluesman R.L. Burnside, Duwayne grew up in Senatobia, Mississippi, playing the deep blues with his father and other heavy dudes like Albert King, B.B. King, and Bobby "Blue" Bland in and around the Hill Country juke joint run by yet another ferocious Mississippi guitarist, Junior Kimbrough. After an early-millennium stint in the North Mississippi All-Stars, Duwayne ventured out on his own, stoking blues, roots, and jam aficionados everywhere. Under Pressure, his 2005 release on the Mississippi Mafia label, shows his instrumental phrases wonderfully contrasting the gravel urgency of his voice. But there's really no better way to beat the blues than to see it live. Folks who may be feeling low down and no good are encouraged to head to South Florida's greatest venues, stare at the bottom of a whiskey glass, and maybe even shake their asses. Duwayne Burnside plays at 9 p.m. Thursday, February 23, at the Bamboo Room, 25 S. "J" St., Lake Worth. Tickets cost $15. Call 561-585-2583.
