Yep, you read correctly -- this week it was announced that Black Sheep Bar has officially been sold to new owners and its last hurrah will be this Saturday night. Far from being a cause for concern to loyal patrons, however, current owner and resident DJ/tastemaker Juan "BassHead" Loumiet assures us that this is actually a good thing. "In my mind, I equate this to a graduation," said Loumiet. "We are leaving the business in very capable hands, and our future is bright as we are partnering up with established entities all over town who want to include what we can bring to the table."
During its current incarnation, Black Sheep Bar has been virtually the only place in Miami where you can hear the sounds of drum 'n' bass, dupstep, and its myriad bass-heavy offshoots in an appropriately relaxed unpretentious atmosphere. Weekly parties and special WMC events have brought us some of the best international underground talent, offering the 305 a respite from the predictable.
It's pretty clear that Black Sheep and BassHead Music played no small
part in introducing dubstep to Miami, and in 2009 we've seen this
underground movement bubble up to the surface with these sound catching
on at other venues. "I'm proud to say that Black Sheep has served its
purpose," said Loumiet. "Together we achieved the primary goal of
exposing our local underground bass culture to a more mainstream
audience. This is evident by the events popping up all over town which
include the music and talented people we have been showcasing at Black
Sheep all along."
Saturday night's closing party should be
nothing short of a bass extravaganza, with 30+ artists and DJs
performing, including Juan BassHead vs. Otto Con Schirach, Notorious
Nastie, and a "special guest from the UK" (which sounds ominously
promising). The establishment also needs to dispose of all its liquor
left in stock, so drink specials will be offered all night. If you've
never had the chance to enjoy the special sounds and vibe at Black
Sheep, this is your last chance to do so, while enjoying possibly the
most massive bass soirée this side of WMC!
Black Sheep Closing Party. Saturday, July 25, 8 p.m.-5 a.m. 721 North Lincoln Lane, Miami Beach.
