Breast in Peace at Radio-Active Records This Saturday With Live Music and Pink Vinyl

It's Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and you know, dear readers, that saving tatas is a cause we can really get behind. In all seriousness, breast cancer is one of the most curable forms of cancer. About one in eight American women will develop it in their lifetimes, and nearly 100 percent of women diagnosed in the early stages can be treated and cured.

If you are like us, you probably find yourself not having the proper dapper suit or enough coin to get inside one of the plethora of Pink Ribbon luncheons taking place in Palm Beach and Broward counties this month. But the great folks over at Radio-Active Records have a way for real people like us to contribute with Breast in Peace.

This awesomely titled charity event adds a musical wallop to the cause. There will be sets by Killmama and the Astrea Corporation, and you can snag a copy of some rare pink vinyl records from the likes of Against Me!, Courtney Barnett, and Me First and the Gimmie Gimmies. Breast in Peace performer and County Grind favorite hootin' and hollerin' front gal Sophie Sputnik knows the struggles of overcoming cancer all too well. The spunky lead singer of Killmama was diagnosed with leukemia at the tender age of 5. "Although I was young when I was battling [cancer], I have a deep understanding of what it feels like to have chemo strip you of your identity," she said. As a survivor herself, she deeply empathizes with others on the long road back to full recovery. "Overcoming that feeling of losing yourself isn't easy. I feel like I'm still fighting to get my identity back, even after all these years." Sputnik has played more than a few cancer awareness events over the past few years and tells us she finds it deeply inspiring to be joining the fight. "Breast cancer survivors are women warriors, I can dig that," she assures. And certainly, female fighters are welcome at this weekend's event. Breast in Peace was created not only by Radio-Active Records but also by Sony and RED Distribution. These are the driving forces behind the retail initiative Ten Bands One Cause, a new charitable venture where ten bands -- some of which had never put out vinyl before -- will release ten extremely limited records pressed on sweet-looking pink vinyl. One dollar from every LP sold will be donated to Gilda's Club NYC, a nonprofit organization created in the memory of original Saturday Night Live cast member Gilda Radner, who passed away from ovarian cancer in 1989.
