Cold War Kids' guitarist Jonathon Russell cut his hand and was briefly hospitalized prior to the band's performance at the Heineken Inspire event Friday evening at the Moore Building in Miami's Design District. New Times photographer Ian Witlen, who was photographing the band backstage at the time, says that Russell got hurt when he stepped on what looked like a painted cement ledge -- but it turned out to be waist-deep water covered with lily pads.
As Russell fell, according to Witlen, he caught his balance on a very sharp, woven copper fence and sliced his hand
open. The injury is reportedly not serious.
The Cold War Kids still took the stage, later than was originally
planned, and played as a three-piece. More details of the show, also
featuring the Hold Steady, here. The band's next concert is scheduled
for June 3 in San Jose, California.
This is not the first time that Ian Witlen (as well as Miami New Times
music editor Arielle Castillo and myself) attended a concert featuring
an injury that affected the outcome of the night. Back in January,
Monotonix's singer Ami Shalev hurt
his leg during a performance at Respectable Street in West Palm
Beach.
