These days, lots of subgenres are cropping up in the metal sphere, some with influences from free jazz, progressive/experimental rock, electronica, and hardcore punk. Cleveland's Chimaira is a blend of all of these inspirations, and its performances reflect that. While the relentless guitars shred and grind in the manner of Slayer and Slipknot, Chimaira softens the brutality of its approach with monolithic slabs of bass, memorably melodic hooks, and the brainy sampling and electronic acumen of group member Chris Spicuzza. Let lesser bands wallow in self-destruction — Chimaira not only aims to annihilate but also leaves something substantial in its wake.
