Not a shock to see that the late Solomon Burke is getting a musical tribute this evening at Monterey Club in Fort Lauderdale. With music encyclopedia (and friend of County Grind) Dee Jay Sensitive Side at the helm, Burke's extensive career that earned him the "King of Rock and Soul" title is in good hands. Aside from pouring out a couple for Solomon, the night should be a fierce one for the local music community, with Load punk legend Bobby Load debuting his Bobby Load Band at 8 p.m. What a load! We couldn't resist.
Regardless, for the Solomon Burke portion later in the evening, we've got a couple of requests that we hope the crew can cover. We tried to choose five upbeat jams to request for tonight's tribute -- but sometimes you just gotta let those tears fly.
"I Can't Stop Loving You" was popularized by Ray Charles (it was originally written by Don Gibson) in 1962, and it proved to be a groundbreaking melody, bridging the divide between R&B and country music. Although Burke's version followed Charles (this is a live recording from 1987), it is well on par.
"Get Out of My Life Woman" will sound familiar to anyone who has listened to Dr. Dre's The Chronic, and if Tuesdays at Monterey is your jawn, then this has to be one of them. Great little bit here from his backup singers that got repurposed for "The Chronic (Intro)."

"He'll Have to Go" is another country song revamped by Burke. This was originally a Jim Reeves tune, and Elvis eventually got a hold of it. Although it says "turn the jukebox way down low," let's keep it loud for the King tonight.

"Stupidity" is the sort of song rocking out of Monterey Club any night of the week as is. From the call and response to the subversive message within, Burke at his most secular invites bodies to get together on his behalf.
"Cry to Me" not only has one of the most potent vocals of Burke's career; it proclaims that "nothing can be sadder than a glass of wine alone," so get thee to the Monterey club tonight.
