So my buddy Juan Montoya posted a Plasmatics video up on Facebook this morning, and while I was watching it, I noticed an obscene number of people on the discussion board likening the Plasmatics' awesome frontwoman Wendy O. Williams to Lady Gaga. And then it struck me: I had never actually heard Lady Gaga before, at least that I knew of. (Yes, I'm aware this almost counts as an accomplishment). Immediately I was eaten up by thoughts of musical journalism integrity and set out to investigate the comparison.
Since County Grind usually lets you, the reader, formulate your own opinions, here's the aforementioned Plasmatics video, and then Lady Gaga's "Poker Face" video.
Notice the similarities in choreography and the intricacies of the costumes. Notice how one's the '70s and the other's in the '00s. Decide who wears whipped cream and clothespins better. And while we're on it, can anybody explain why everyone on the Internet seems convinced that Lady Gaga is a man? Lord knows I've been fooled once before, but I just don't see it.
But, like Williams, will Lady Gaga turn a shotgun to her face when she turns 48? (I mean that in the nicest possible way; Wendy's missed by many folks). Would there be a Lady Gaga and the likes had it not been for pioneers like Wendy O.? Well, that's easy, I don't fucking think so. But remember, I'm just a hack.
The Plasmatics - "Butcher Baby"
Lady Gaga - "Poker Face"
Lady Gaga could use a chainsaw. Or have one of those big fucking dogs tear through one of the backup dancers. That would be cool.
