Since Mayday signed to Strange Music last year, the relationship between the local act and label head Tech N9ne has been positively symbiotic. Besides touring the most obscure reaches of the country (Casper, Wyoming, anyone?) with the underground legend, Mayday has guested on his tracks and, now, completely produced his latest EP, Klusterfuk. It's six tracks of Tech's trademark spitfire rapping, many of the songs flavored with the addition of new Strange signees.

On "Quick Flick," for instance, Krizz Kaliko adds a stoner sing-song answer to Tech's faster flow, while Mayday themselves show up on "Blur," a track built on a moody reverse-warp bass line. In fact, throughout the EP, Mayday's production touch is a fresh one -- no straightforward boom-bap beats here. Instead, it sounds like they've drawn from the Miami underground club landscape, because there's more than a hint of dubsteppy, low-end bass stuff going on.

It's clearly something that's clicking for fans when matched up with Tech's massive grassroots following. This past Tuesday, the EP was released digitally on iTunes -- and quickly rose to the number-one slot on the service's hip-hop charts. By yesterday, it had reached number six on iTunes' overall album chart, beating out even that inescapable fun. record. (Today it sits at number eight overall -- guess those charts are updated pretty frequently -- but still at number one in the hip-hop/rap category.)

It bodes well for Mayday's debut full-length for Strange Music, Take Me to Your Leader, which is due out on Tuesday, March 27. The record features cameos from Tech (of course) as well as Dead Prez, Murs, Broward native Ace Hood, and others.

You can listen to "Blur," from Tech N9ne's EP, then download that Mayday/Dead Prez collab track, "TNT," below -- and go cop Klusterfuk on iTunes for $5.99. The EP will also come bundled with the Mayday full-length as a bonus.
