While understated and ethereal in the vein of the Cowboy Junkies or an acoustic Mazzy Star, the songs on Over the Rhine's latest release, Drunkard's Prayer, also pulse with a raw tension that comes not from theatrics or volume but patient, dramatic buildup. The Cincinnati duo of Karin Bergquist and Linford Detweiler has been crafting its brand of lo-fi, high-gloss tunes since 1990, allowing Berquist's angelic voice to take the reins to Detweiler's odds-and-ends instrumentation. Like secret attic music or the soundtrack to the girl next door's lucid dream, this stuff is close, haunting, and intangible. Maybe the best way to describe it is by namedropping the TV shows the band's music has graced. Felicity, Angel, and Third Watch all feature the same kind of bottled-up longing that OTR peddles, though with less timeless grace than this music possesses.

Over the Rhine plays with Kim Taylor and Remember the Ocean at 8 p.m. Wednesday, May 11, at Respectable Street Café, 518 Clematis St., West Palm Beach. The show is 18 and older. Tickets cost $10 advance, $12 day of show. Call 561-832-9999.
