Miami New Times, the Southeast's top alternative news weekly, is giving away $4,000 in awards to local artists.

As part of our annual Artopia® celebration, artists of all stripes -- filmmakers, fashion designers, visual artists, performance artists, writers  - can apply for a MasterMind Award. It's easy to enter: Applicants can send work via web link, e-mail, or snail mail, along with a bio and/or artist's statement. Alternately, the public is welcome to nominate artists whose work they admire. Entry is limited to those who work, reside, or attend school in Miami-Dade County. There is no fee to enter, and the money can be used any way the winner sees fit. Submissions are due by 5 p.m. January 8. Separate $1,000 awards will be given to four chosen artists, and winners may use the money however they please. Details are available at newtimesartopia.com.

That website also has information about our third annual Artopia® event, where winners will be announced. The eye-popping spectacle -- with music, film, fashion, art and music -- will be held at the Arsht Center on February 11. Admission is only $15. ($20 at the door).

New Times is part of a national newspaper chain, Village Voice Media (villagevoicemedia.com), which includes papers such as the Village Voice in New York, L.A. Weekly, Seattle Weekly, Westword in Denver, the Houston Press, SF Weekly in San Francisco, and many more!

Artopia® is co presented by the Miami International Film Festival and

in association with the Downtown Development Authority and the United

Way. The goal of the contest and the party is to build a more vibrant

arts community, to foster cutting-edge work, to

celebrate local artists, and to hopefully draw unknowns from the

woodwork. We expect to make this an annual tradition.

Entries should be sent to Managing editor Jorge Casuso, 2800 Biscayne Blvd., Miami, Florida 33138, or to [email protected].
