Miguel Migs knows his history. His soulful, song-oriented deep house draws heavily on the style's disco roots, tinting it with soul, funk, hip-hop, and reggae influences. In the studio, Migs employs live musicians and soulful vocalists, skillfully blending organic elements with electronic textures and programmed beats to create ultraslick yet organic-sounding productions. The results are like the missing link connecting lush, classic disco, and the stark electronic pulse of house and techno. At its worst moments, it's shallow, and the lyrics and vocals grate painfully. When it all clicks, though, it becomes something special, a heartfelt, emotionally engaging slice of dance-floor heaven. Now Migs is taking his act out of the studio, touring with several vocalists and musicians to bring his sound to life in the club setting. If he can catalyze the best elements of his music with that raw, live energy, his date at Set this Friday should prove to be a memorable show.
