A new weekly indie dance party called NOIR kicks off this Wednesday night at Pompano Beach's Club Cinema -- and what name would be more appropriate for a place with an allegedly checkered history. The oft-shuttered, well-equipped club hasn't hosted a weekly dance party since, well, since we can remember.
Spearheading the new night is DJ Marvelous Kendall, who has promoted and spun records for five years at Respectable Street's Flaunt Thursdays, one of Palm Beach County's most popular and reputable electro nights. Named Best Club DJ by this very publication last year, Kendall knows how to encite an audience with his indie-disco smashups. He plans to screen '40s and '50s crime dramas as part of NOIR every
week, beginning this Wednesday with Samuel Fuller's 1953 hardboiled hit Pickup on South Street. A quick Q&A with Kendall Courtney about the night follows.
How did you set up Noir? I have heard some interesting stories about the Club Cinema folks.
Oddly enough a guy I'm friends with is a promoter there and said they wanted us to do a night there. They do seem to be pretty much hiding in the shadows at this huge venue though. I'm almost as interested to see what happens as I am to do something there in the first place.
Why did you decide to start with Pickup on South Street?
In high school I was in a cinematography class, and I remember us watching
that and some Hitchcock flicks for our noir section. That
stuck out for me.
Aside from Samuel Fuller, which other directors do you envision including for this?
Definitely
going to drop some Hitchcock in there on the second week. Other than
that, I'll probably start picking them out of a hat. Maybe make a drinking game out of it the week before... who knows?
