Ed Artigas is a man of many musical accomplishments. Like, so many that we can mention only a scant few here. Formerly of Map of the Universe and Bling Bling, his newest endeavor, Planelifter, is just starting to really take off.
The name Planelifter has been around since 1999, when the members played a few gigs around South Florida, including tribute shows to Joy Division and New Order (one was at Respectable Street, the other in Miami). Artigas remains the only original member of the band. In December 2010, Artigas says, "I was itching to do something droney and shoegaze-influenced. I recruited two friends from the scene I had been wanting to play with in a band."
These fellow Hialeahans were drummer Albert Morales, formerly of the Starts and Number 3 Pencils, and bassist Jorge Ubieta of Arsonists, Vultures Are Wolves, and Rimsky.
Planelifter is putting out its first album on Artigas' now-defunct label Spy-Fi Records, which, in the past, has released music by Monotract, Machete, and Zira. Artigas says Planelifter rehearsed once a week until October before recording its seven-song EP, As You Stand Still, at the Shack North with Ferny Coipel of Humbert.

So far, the band has performed at Hialeahfest (at which point Artigas was quoted as saying, "If necessity is the mother of all invention, then Hialeah is the mother of necessity."), the Artist Collective Extravaganza's Halloween Bash, and at Sweat Records. They're ready to come across county lines to play at Radio-Active Records on February 18.
Artigas says of performing in Fort Lauderdale, "I have a lot of friends I don't get to see normally in Broward, and I like the vibe there obviously." However, he added, "I like that Miami is 45 minutes closer," giving it an understandable leg up.
