Just about everyone in 1987 owned the Appetite for Destruction cassette. It is, was, and always will be a rock 'n' roll classic. Radio stations and sports bars all around the country still play "Welcome to the Jungle" on a regular basis. On top of that, people still dance to it in public. "Used to Love Her" is one of the darkest love songs of all time and "November Rain" one of the most epic. Point is, Guns N' Roses will likely always be kind of a big deal, no matter what Axl's hair looks like or who's in the band.
They just announced a last-minute show at the Fillmore Miami Beach on February 29, and so, we had to take note. There were a few questions, though, that we wanted answered about GNR in its present incarnation and about their upcoming performance in South Florida.
Will Axl be wearing cornrows?
When Chinese Democracy was released, Axl Rose revealed a different side of himself. This side looked as if it had just returned from a cruise to Jamaica. Those cornrows were one of the least expected fashion decisions made by any musician since Cher showed her whole body in "If I Could Turn Back Time." It's unlikely, though, that he's still sporting this look in 2012. If you wore cornrows like that for that long at that age, you'd likely be entirely bald at this point. So, we're predicting no braids. Definitely bandanna.
Will there be pyrotechnics at the Fillmore?
According to New Times writer Matt Preira's review of the GNR show last October at American Airlines Arena, there was some pyro fun at the show. The Fillmore is a much more intimate venue with a smaller stage that may not be able to handle the big fiery guns. We're thinking no big pyrotechnics at the Fillmore. Maybe sparklers? We prefer sparklers.
Who is Guns N' Roses anymore?
Is it just Axl and that raspy voice? Is Axl even involved? Yes, luckily, but no Slash or Duff or Izzy. Here's who's in the band now, so that you know what's going on. There are guitarists DJ Ashba, Ron "Bumblefoot" Thal, and Richard Fortus. The bassist is Tommy Stinson, and keyboardists include Dizzy Reed and Chris Pitman. Then there's drummer Frank Ferrer. Keep that in mind before you start yelling out, "I love you Slash!"
Obviously, we're wondering if the show will offer awesome '80s rockin'.
