This week, we published a list of the top 50 happy hours in Broward and Palm Beach counties, and we admittedly left off one of our favorite drinking spots: the Square Grouper. The problem is that the famous strip of sand with a Tiki hut doesn't technically have a happy hour special.
What they have instead is an all-day deal, "must drink Mondays," when all beers are $2.50. So we say that's deserving of an honorable mention.
If you haven't been, the Square Grouper juts into the inlet that
separates north Jupiter. Across the water is the Jupiter lighthouse, and out past the jetty is the open ocean.
The
bar itself is nothing more than a thatched-roof, open-air structure made from
wood that appears to have washed ashore. It's painted in multiple
Caribbean themes. Plastic tables and chairs sit around the main bar
area, which has a floor of white sand. Aside from the occasional rumble
of boats and bikers pulling up to the place, you mostly just hear water
lapping up on the sea wall.
If that weren't reason enough to give
it an honorable mention, consider that Alan Jackson used the Square
Grouper as a backdrop for his "It's Five O'Clock Somewhere" video. Love
or hate that song, it's synonymous with happy hour, and therefore, so
is the Square Grouper.
