When Wormhole Wednesdays at the Lounge ended its two-year run last December, West Palm Beach’s indie dance scene seemed to be on the ropes. But it turns out Wormhole fans merely had to move the party to the other side of Clematis Street for Television Club Thursdays at Respectable’s. Television Club kicked off last August when part-time Wormhole DJ (and former Miami resident) Johnny Lovell moved to the 561. Having already spun at FIU’s Radiate 88.1 FM, SpiderPussy nights in South Beach, and a short-lived stint at Automatic Slim's, Lovell (a.k.a., DJ Johnnylove) was ready to try his tunes up north.

“I’m always out looking for new music. I try to bring something different each week,” Lovell says. “We'll spin the usual suspects (Clap Your Hands Say Yeah, the Faint, Le Tigre, Gorillaz, Bloc Party) and throw in some Super Furry Animals or Pizzicato Five,” Lovell says, adding that there’s no shortage of hip-hop, despite protestations from a few cranky dark-wavers. “Sometimes I get static from some of the old-school Respectable Street regulars for playing hip-hop. But seriously, who can resist the likes of Lady Sovereign, Cajmere, Fannypack, Spank Rock, M.I.A., Jay-Z, and Kanye West?”

In the end, though, Television Club’s all about creating a low-key, party-like vibe.

“We like to come down and mix it up with the people and get on the dance floor with everyone,” he says. “I'm always buying people drinks and making sure people are having fun. [There’s] no VIP or anything like that -- just a good time with sweet drink specials, great music, and lots of dancing.”

Alas, the Clematis crew won’t need to look southward for a place to chill. As long as the TV’s on, the beats will flow. — Jason Budjinski

Television Club kicks it every Thursday at 10 p.m. at Respectable Street, 518 Clematis St., West Palm Beach. Admission is free for 21 and up. Call 561-832-9999, or visit www.myspace.com/televisionclub.
