Ever wondered what Miles Davis might've sounded like if he'd hung out in Rio or spent time with his toes in the sand in La Habana? Well, you're guess is as good as mine or anyone else's, and since the man is dead, we'll probably never know. But the Gecko Jazz Project does have a damned cool angle on bebop. If you're expecting Kind of Blue with a salsa band, you've gone horribly awry. Think more along the lines of Aura with Stan Getz lending some bossa influence. Bebop with a distinct inclination toward Latin jazz. But even that's still not quite right.

However you try to label it, you just don't get solid jazz like this  often anymore, and composer and bassist Robert "Be-Bob" Grabowski and the band are serving it up live at the Van Dyke (where else?) this Tuesday. Definitely worth checking out.

The Gecko Jazz Project performs at the Van Dyke this Tuesday, August 25.
