The town of Riverdale has Josie & the Pussycats, Palo Alto has the
Donnas, and now Fort Lauderdale is lucky to be the home of the New, an
all-girl band whose music is grabbing attention with
catchy lyrics and punk attitude. In a world where "grrrl bands" are
almost completely obsolete, and often associated with man-hating women, the New is breaking those stereotypes with
tracks like "Her Lipstick Said" and "Woah Woah" that just make you wanna
roll down the windows and sing along.
Formerly a trio by the name of AKA, the band emerged onto the South Florida music scene in 2004, but as the years went by and the girls matured, they decided to move in a different direction. Along with a name change, the band gained two new members, Jordan Calloway on keyboard and replaced Nabedi Osorio with Giz Forte on the drums, however they're still staying true to their power pop high-energy sound.
On March 3, Nabedi Osorio will be joining founding members Natalie Martinez and Lori Garrote back on stage for an AKA reunion show taking place at Revolution in downtown Fort Lauderdale. Also playing will be Osorio's current band the State Of, the New, and Lindsay Bell as well as special performances by the Kreepy Kittens and a live hair cutting show by Contesta Rock Hair.
AKA Reunion Show. With Lindsay Bell, the State of, the New. 7 p.m., Thursday, March 3 at the Green Room, 200 W. Broward Blvd., Fort Lauderdale. Tickets cost $5; 18+. Click here.
