Spike Jonze is one of the finest music video directors because he illuminates an artist's existing message the way a gushing fan might, but with the technical skill and seasoning to make it breathtaking. "But by the time the first bombs fell/ We were already bored" is a heavy couplet but pretty open-ended. By setting the Arcade Fire's "The Suburbs" in a nondescript Texas subdivision, by mixing up their (admittedly all-Caucasian) faces constantly, by keeping the bad things that start happening unexplained, and by letting the song dictate the tempo, Jonze creates a window into post-Boomer suburban life that is heartfelt but also profoundly scary.
