County Grind and Fort Lauderdale's Radio-Active Records hook up to discuss each week's finest new releases in Moving Units. This week, The Fool by Los Angeles indie-rock group Warpaint.
"Warpaint's debut LP, The Fool, has become one of my favorite records of
the past few months. All the essentials are here: delays, reverb,
minimalist song structures and melodies that would not out of place on
4AD in their '80s heyday. With "Undertow," The Fool avoids having the lead single break
all fluidity and cohesiveness of the LP (see 'Drunk Girls' from LCD
Soundsystem's This Is Happening) by melting the songs together for
accessible continuity, an attribute that is sometimes lacking from the

Generally in agreement and would add only that Warpaint's "Undertow" is a bit like Nirvana's "Polly," right down to the cadence of lyrics "what's the matter/You hurt yourself." In all, the album is a sumptuous follow-up to the 2008 EP Exquisite Corpse.
