Elefant must have stolen a bottle of essence du T. Rex and stashed it somewhere. The band's debut album, Sunlight Makes Me Paranoid, features some of the catchiest and cheekiest rock to be heard since the late great Marc Bolan haunted the early '70s glitter rock scene. "Fuck yeah, that's the ultimate compliment," says Elefant frontman Diego Garcia, affirming the comparison over the phone from his New York City apartment. But Elefant has also garnered comparisons to a host of other seminal artists including David Bowie, New Order, the Cure, the Psychedelic Furs, the Smiths, Pulp, Bauhaus, and Television. "That list goes on and on," Garcia says. "Everyone seems to know what we sound like, but, then again, every writer or critic is adding something new to the mix." Just as film director Wes Anderson mixes Luis Buñuel with Orson Welles to create a style all his own, Elefant has developed a unique voice by drawing on an array of disparate influences. "When you see us live," Garcia assures, "it will all make sense." Elefant performs an all-ages show with Interpol and the Occasion at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, October 11, at Venu, 100 SW Third Ave., Fort Lauderdale. Tickets cost $18. Call 954-727-0950.
