A 9-year-old Fort Lauderdale girl is safe and sound today after she was able to escape from her abductor's car on Monday.
The girl was walking along NW Ninth Avenue and Second Street when a man grabbed her and threw her into his car.
She managed to escape from the car and run for help, but not before the man sped off.
The man, described as a light-skinned male, was driving a late-model, white, four-door Chevrolet Impala.
The girl, investigators say, has little memory of the traumatizing incident beyond that.
"We have to take into account that we're dealing with such a young victim," Detective DeAnna Greenlaw said. "We're just happy she was able to free herself.''
The neighborhood where the girl was almost abducted is described as a rough area by at least one resident.
"You got crackheads, you got dope fiends, you got murderers, you got punks, you got suicidal people," resident Avyosha Harris, 32, said. "You got all kinds of people around here."
Police are hoping that surveillance cameras residents have on their homes were able to capture the incident and help them capture the would-be abductor. Detectives are also continuing to work with the girl to get a composite sketch of her attacker.
