Senator Bill Nelson has announced that he will be undergoing surgery on Monday to remove prostate cancer. 

According to a press release, Nelson has exhibited no symptoms, and that doctors found the cancer early during a routine medical exam. The cancer has not spread, according to further studies done on the Senator, the release says.

"I've been blessed with good health, which has allowed me the great privilege of public service," Nelson, 72, said in a statement. "I look forward to continuing serving our country and Florida.

Nelson says that the surgery will be performed in a hospital in Florida, and that the diagnosis and surgery will not impact his re-election bid in 2018.

Nelson showed off his physical prowess lately when he was forced to pay a bet he made with Sen. Dick Durbin of Illinois after the Tampa Bay Lightning were beaten by the Chicago Blackhawks in the Stanley Cup last month.
