Hey, Spirit Airlines is good for something (probably) -- making the average airfare from the Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport the third-lowest in the country, at $266.

The ranking was done by the Bureau of Transportation Statistics, which found that only the airports in Atlantic City, New Jersey, and Long Beach, California have cheaper trips than Fort Lauderdale.

The nickel-and-diming may have may skew that, though, based on how the BTS put this list together.

"Fares are based on the total ticket value which consists of the price charged by the airlines plus any additional taxes and fees levied by an outside entity at the time of purchase," the agency says. "Fares include only the price paid at the time of the ticket purchase and do not include other fees, such as baggage fees, paid at the airport or onboard the aircraft."

Yeah, we're looking at you, Spirit.

For comparison's sake, though, the highest prices without fees are in Memphis, Cincinnati, and Washington, D.C., which each average prices of $475 or $476.

The BTS says it counted round-trip and one-way fares in its listing.

Fort Lauderdale's average of $266 is lower than the national second-quarter average has been in recent history -- the BTS lists the national second-quarter average going back to 1995.
