Two years ago, the athletic director of Everglades High in Miramar was desperate to hang on to the school's promising young coach, Mike Palmieri. A 2007 article in the Sun-Sentinel (sorry, I can't find a link to a web version) details how Everglades lost Palmieri -- who it paid about $3,000 -- because a school in North Carolina was offering $10,000, plus all the additional money its boosters could raise.

Palmieri is now the football coach of the high school in Mallard Creek, a town outside Charlotte. And according to this article in the Charlotte Observer, he's had a rough time of it. That team won its first nine games, only to be busted for fielding an ineligible player, meaning it had to forfeit those nine wins and costing the team a berth in the playoffs.

Still, it's evident that Palmieri's a turnaround specialist. The year before last, his first as coach, the team went 1-9. His record in Miramar: 24-6.
