On May 5, "a man who orchestrated a murder on Interstate 95 'pocket dialed' 911 just before [a] fatal shooting," the Broward Sheriff's Office announced in a news release. "On a recorded line, Scott Simon can be heard telling someone else that he's going to follow the victim home and kill him. Minutes later, 33-year-old Nicholas Walker was shot and killed while driving his car onto the highway." The killing occurred at the on-ramp to I-95 at Commercial Boulevard in Oakland Park.
Though authorities don't believe he pulled the trigger, Simon, 24, was arrested May 21 and charged with first-degree murder. Detectives say he organized the shooting after arguing with Walker at a Waffle House.
From the news release: "When deputies arrived at the scene shortly after 6:40 a.m., they found Walker's silver Buick crashed into a guard rail. Deputies and Oakland Park Fire Rescue extinguished a fire in the engine compartment, but Walker had already died of gunshot wounds. The investigation prompted a three-hour closure of all southbound lanes of I-95."
Detectives were asking the public to help identify two other suspects. Both were in a black 2012 Buick GS early on May 5. Provide tips to 954-493-TIPS (8477) or via browardcrimestoppers.org. Crime Stoppers will pay up to $1,000 for information that leads to an arrest.
Alas, BSO says, "the errant 911 call will not be released," nor will Simon's arrest warrant, which has been sealed.
