After yesterday's story that 2012 congressional candidate Patrick Murphy was the only recipient of campaign contributions from former Gov. Charlie Crist for this election cycle, we've discovered that Murphy also donated to Crist's failed U.S. Senate bid.
According to Federal Election Commission records, Murphy gave what was then the maximum amount for an individual contribution to Crist in March 2010, contributing $2,400 for his primary and general election campaigns -- in which Crist was eventually walloped by Sen. Marco Rubio.
The donations between the two aren't really surprising, since both Crist and Murphy, a CPA, recently abandoned the Republican Party, and while Crist is currently an Independent, both he and Murphy have found some support as more conservative left-leaners.
Murphy's other campaign contributions include $500 to Sen. Bob Casey of Pennsylvania, $2,000 to Rep. Steve Israel of New York, $2,500 to President Barack Obama, $3,300 to Sen. Bill Nelson, $4,200 to Rep. Ted Deutch, and $4,200 to Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz -- all for the respective candidates' reelection campaigns.
Murphy has also donated $2,000 this election cycle to the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee and gave $2,300 to Mitt Romney's presidential campaign for the primary election in 2007.
The current vice president of Coastal Environmental Services, Murphy is still a huge underdog in his bid to unseat Rep. Allen West in 2012, but he's been gaining steam -- and attention -- since posting the highest fundraising totals of any congressional challenger in the current election cycle.
He raised just $16,000 more last quarter than his foe in the Democratic primary, former West Palm Beach Mayor Lois Frankel, but that still leaves Murphy with more cash on hand than West himself.
Congress is currently without a Patrick Murphy for the first time since 2006, so we'll see if this Patrick Murphy's campaign can get one back to the Capitol.
