Pray for Allen West

Allen West sounds tired. He's working very, very hard, and unlike just about anybody else in our Congress, he actually talks to his constituents. Constantly. They want him, he's there. Wanna talk to him one on one? More often than not, he advertises the route he takes on his morning jogs.

Perhaps he should slow down. Just after touching down at Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport late Friday night, Allen West met with local supporters at a fire station. (The meeting has since been the subject of a bizarre conspiracy theory.) West was oddly incoherent.

This is very serious times... When people start have folks come up with Washington, D.C., and they start this incredible demagogic talk about how you're gonna kill women, and how you're gonna kill the elderly and the seniors and how you're going to kill children -- that's because they don't have any solutions ...

We have got to turn the country around, or this little girl right here does not have a future... By 2035, there will not be a United States of America.

Didja catch that? I excised four or five draggy sentences from the above excerpt, but the essence is right there: West deriding Democrats for their sky-is-falling rhetoric immediately before telling a little girl to watch out cuz the sky is falling. A more composed Allen West would realize he can't have it both ways.

West went on for a bit, jumping from subject to subject. It was a little aimless, a little riffy, bot of which were fine. He was among his own people, checking in after a long sojourn in Washington. West talked about Israel. He talked about money. He talked about terror. All very brief, all quite general. There was no reason to go into specifics, for the assembled had heard these points before.

West's only strange utterance came about two-thirds of the way through his address, when he asked his constituents to bear him in mind as they said a very specific prayer. "Keep me in prayer," West asked:

If you just have a little bit of time, whenever you can, turn over to 1 Kings, chapter three, the exact same prayer that Solomon asked for wisdom and discernment to lead his people.

That prayer, in the KJV, reads:

I am only a little child and do not know how to carry out my duties. Your servant is here among the people you have chosen, a great people, too numerous to count or number. So give your servant a discerning heart to govern your people and to distinguish between right and wrong. For who is able to govern this great people of yours?

Solomon became a great and wise king who ruled over his people for 60 years. Not long after West asked his constituent's to repeat the monarch's prayer, he bade them good night as the assembled spontaneously sang "God Bless America." At the end, many in attendance could be heard crying "Allen West for president," as the Congressman donned his jacket and left the building.
